Rwanda experiences a mixed HIV epidemic, generalized in the adult population, with an adult HIV prevalence rate stabilized around 3 percent (DHS 2010) with aspects of a concentrated epidemic among certain key populations at higher risk of HIV infection. Rwanda faces a generalized epidemic, with an HIV prevalence rate of 3.1 percent among adults ages 15 to 49. The prevalence rate has remained relatively stable, with an overall decline since the late 1990s, partly due to improved HIV surveillance methodology. Available data shows that the HIV prevalence in Rwanda is at 3 per cent in the general population (15-49 years), 4 per cent among women and 2 per cent among men. The HIV prevalence is highest in the Kigali where it is 6.3 per cent and is relatively uniform throughout the other provinces (2 per cent to 3 per cent). editor@newtimesrwanda.com Figure 1: Prevalence of HIV/AIDS by residence and sex Figure 2: Prevalence of HIV/AIDS by quintile age group Figure 3.

SETTING: A national referral rehabilitation centre in Rwanda faces a generalized epidemic, with an HIV prevalence rate of 3.1 percent among adults ages 15 to 49. The prevalence rate has remained relatively stable, with an overall decline since the late 1990s, partly due to improved HIV surveillance methodology. The high HIV prevalence recorded in women originating from rural Rwanda (24-4%) may be attributable to injuries or heterosexual transmission, including rapes. We are recommending reactivation of HIV surveillance, and revival of syphilis screening and treatment in prenatal care in Kigali and in Rwanda. 4 We dedicate this report to the many women who have become victims of the civil war in Rwanda. Background: Rwanda conducted a national tuberculosis (TB) prevalence survey to determine the magnitude of TB in the country and determine to what extent the national surveillance system captures all TB cases.
