The social patterning in menstrual communication, a taboo in India, and its consequent health-effects on adolescents are under-studied. Menstruation is a key process in a woman’s life integral to her well-being and an indicator of her fertility. One expects that menstruation’s contribution to the propagation of the species would lead to the valorization of both deed and doer—namely, menstruation and women. 1 Instead, globally, and in particular in India (our site of research), menstruation is largely shamed and silenced.

The country research for India was also informed by 72 interviews with adolescent girls from rural and urban areas near Kanpur, UP, and Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu between November and December 2015 in the following categories: (1) early post-menarche 0 to 1 year post-menarche, (2) post-menarche 1 to 3 years post-menarche, and (3) late post-menarche 3+ years post-menarche up to 18 years old. The Oscars have brought global attention to menstruation once again, emphasising how deeply entrenched social norms about menstruation restrict girls’ freedom and affect their health. One solution offered was sanitary pads. Lauding sanitary pads as the solution to menstrual health and hygiene is not new. These hard-hitting facts were found in a 2016 study, ‘Menstrual Hygiene management among adolescent girls in India: a systematic review and meta-analysis by van Eijk.’ These facts show that women not only need better access to menstrual product and medical care, they need to be educated from a young age about periods.
